Hey, I'm Mathew.

I'm Mathew Kennedy-Brewer, an Applications Software Development student at Alfred State College working toward my B.Tech. I also have an A.A.S. in Information Technology. I've always been interested in computers, but programming is what really got me interested in understanding how software works and how I could make my own.

A lot of my projects come from things I wish existed or things I want to improve. I work on web apps with Svelte and TypeScript, Minecraft mods with Kotlin and Java, and utilities for my Linux setup. I'm especially interested in backend development, software architecture, open source, and developer tools. Performance and maintainability matter to me, but I also care quite a bit about whether software is actually nice to use.

I've worked at Alfred State's IT Help Desk since 2023, where I've gotten experience troubleshooting hardware, software, and account problems and helping people with different levels of technical knowledge. Outside of school and work, I use openSUSE Tumbleweed, experiment with self-hosting, and spend probably too much time looking into development tools and new technologies. When I'm learning something new, I prefer to experiment with it myself, understand why things work, and build something with it rather than just follow a tutorial without knowing what's going on.

Software should stay understandable for the people using it and the people maintaining it.

I care about code that's easy to maintain, architecture that's simple enough to explain, and features people actually find useful. If I'm making something people interact with, I want it to be nice to use too.
